Life Travel Goal #4: Attend the Australian Open accomplished! For day one of the tournament, the group of us purchased grounds passes along with some 41-thousand other fans. For a first round day, we saw some great matches, many of which were close matches, and even some big upsets.

Just in case you thought I was lying, here's the proof I was actually there. I didn't just upload some random photos from a tennis match and pass them off as being from the Australian Open.

A small reminder of just how far we are from Flushing Meadows, NY (US Open) -- a mere 16,690 kilometers.

For our last match of the day, we got seats in Vodafone arena, quite close to courtside since we were willing to sit in the sun section. After an entire day outside in the sun with no ozone layer to filter out the UV rays, this wasn't exactly the wisest idea, but was worth it: the match ROCKED! Mardy Fish, an unseeded American, played an awesome match against Ljubicic, who was ranked as the 4th seed in the tournament. Fish pulled of a huge upset by defeating him in 4 sets, much of his inspiration coming from our chants of "Go Blue Fin!" (Okay, maybe not.)

As if it couldn't get better, there is an entire area between the Vodafone and Rod Laver Arenas where the scene is a mix between a large public lawn and a beer garden with large screens displaying the matches in progress. It's a great place to relax during lunch.

A shot from the Gasquet match early in the day.
